Cancer therapies
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses natural dyes, known as photosensitizers, and light to gently destroy cancer cells. These dyes are absorbed into the cancer cells and make them sensitive to light of certain wavelengths. PDT has a history of almost 100 years and is successfully used to treat various tumors, especially superficial tumors in the skin, lungs, intestines and urinary bladder, as well as tumors in solid organs such as the kidney or bladder.
In addition, treatment methods that support the body’s own immune system in fighting tumor cells have existed for many years. These procedures kill tumor cells through apoptosis and necrosis.
Apoptosis is a physiological process known as programmed cell death or controlled cell death. In contrast, necrosis refers to pathological, i.e. uncontrolled, cell death in an organ or tissue.
